People's Academy: Building Bridges Between Communities and Culture
HANA community members gathered on Saturday, June 20 for People’s Academy session “Building Bridges Between Communities & Culture” to find out what Black resistant art and the Korean Minjung Art movement have in common and how they differ.
Drawing from the works of Jacob Lawrence and Margaret Taylor-Burroughs as well as Hong Song-dam and O Yun, special guest speaker Dr. Susan Lee showed how visual art is used to build national, political, and racial identity and how it can help facilitate social change. In both Black and Korean contexts, participants explored how art is related to identity, survival, belonging, and hopes for the future, then made a collaborative community mural expressing these themes.
Organized by HANA's racial justice committee, GeoBuGi Hakkyo (GBG), the People’s Academy program offers a welcoming bilingual space for anyone interested in learning more about racial justice and exploring their own identities through shared storytelling.
흑인 저항 예술과 한국 민중 미술 운동의 공통점은 무엇일까요? 지난 6월 20일 토요일 시민학교 '공동체간 연대와 문화를 잇는 자리'에서 20명의 하나센터 커뮤니티 구성원들이 모여 이를 알아봤습니다.
특별 초청 연사 이수정 박사는 제이콥 로렌스, 마가렛 테일러-버로스, 홍송담, 오윤의 작품을 바탕으로 시각 예술이 국가적, 정치적, 인종적 정체성을 구축하는 데 어떻게 사용되는지, 그리고 사회 변화를 촉진하는 데 어떻게 도움이 될 수 있는지 보여주었습니다. 참가자들은 예술이 정체성, 생존, 소속감, 그리고 미래에 대한 희망과 어떻게 관련되어 있는지 탐구한 후, 이러한 주제를 표현하는 공동체 벽화를 만들었습니다.
하나센터의 인종 정의 그룹 거북이 학교(GeoBuGi Hakkyo, GBG)가 주관하는 시민학교는 인종 정의에 대해 더 깊이 배우고, 이야기 나눔을 통해 자신의 정체성을 탐색하고자 하는 모든 분을 위한 열린 공간입니다.
