Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities are available either virtually or in person at HANA’s main office in Chicago or Northwest Center (NWC).

English Language 1:1 / Citizenship Tutor (Virtual)

Tutor and build lasting relationships with adult learners on a 1:1 basis. HANA's learners are immigrant community members with limited English proficiency who are looking to improve their English skills or prepare for their U.S. citizenship exam interviews. Tutoring provides an opportunity to connect with our learners and become part of HANA’s Community Education volunteer network. Free, virtual tutor training is required for volunteers without teaching certificates or degrees. Current TEFL and TESL students are exempt from this requirement. (Note: To volunteer as a tutor, you must be able to provide an Illinois address and be at least 21 years old.)

Ideal commitment: 1 day per week, 30-60 minutes.

Basic Computer or Smartphone Volunteer (In Person at HANA’s NWC)

Assist Korean senior students in navigating their computers or smartphones in a small group setting. You'll teach practical skills such as downloading apps on smartphones and composing emails on computers. This is a rewarding opportunity to help enrich the lives of immigrant seniors.

Ideal commitment: 1-2 hours per week during regular business hours (Wednesday 10 am - 12 pm) at HANA’s NWC

Program Support Volunteer (In Person)

This role offers the chance to engage directly with community members, understanding their needs and assisting with service appointments. After completing HANA’S Volunteer Training, you’ll handle basic intake calls and help schedule appointments. While proficiency in Spanish or Korean is preferred, English speakers are also welcome to apply!

Ideal commitment: At least two hours a week during business hours (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM) Monday through Friday

Bilingual Interpreter (In Person or Virtual)

Assist community members by interpreting during their meetings with HANA staff or during our online pro-bono legal clinic. Spanish and Korean are the most frequently needed languages, but HANA also maintains a list of interpreters for other languages as needed.

Ideal commitment: The legal clinic is held on the first Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. For interpreting in meetings, a commitment of at least three hours per month during normal business hours (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM), Monday through Friday, is preferred.

Social Media/Graphic Design Support Volunteer (Virtual)

Bring your design skills to HANA by helping create engaging graphics and content to promote our social service programs, events, and campaigns. This role lets you boost our online presence and connect with the community through effective digital communication. Enhance and contribute your design skills while making a meaningful impact with your creativity!

Ideal commitment: 1-2 hours per week

Event Volunteer (In Person/Virtual)

Volunteer at HANA’s special events, such as Lunar New Year Celebration, Health Fair, and Job Fair, helping us with setting up, welcoming guests, and cleaning up.

Ideal commitment: one time, 4-6 hours

Civic Engagement  (In Person/Virtual)

Join our Civic Engagement team and make a meaningful impact in the immigrant community! As a volunteer, you'll empower community members through direct engagement and advocacy, including door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, voter education, and assistance. You'll help identify key community concerns and support get-out-the-vote efforts, building electoral power and ensuring immigrant voices are heard. Whether you're passionate about equity, justice, or community organizing, this is a rewarding opportunity to drive grassroots change and create a more inclusive and just community.

Ideal commitment: 1 shift (3-hour) per week or 2 shifts per month
