46th Annual 5·18 Gwangju Commemoration

Wheeling, IL — On May 18, 2026, HANA community members and dignitaries gathered at the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (Maru) to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the Gwangju People’s Uprising.

At this year’s commemoration South Korea’s new Consul General, Sangwoo Hong, shared remarks from the President of South Korea.

HANA’s board member, Mira Im, reflected on her experience as a 1.5-generation Korean American immigrant and shared how the legacy of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising continues to represent justice, community, solidarity, and love in difficult times.

Suburban Youth Council members Lydia An and Yuna Jeong spoke about the importance of younger generations learning and carrying forward the history of the Gwangju Uprising.

This event was organized by HANA Center, 5·18 Gwangju World Foundation Chicago, and Kim Dae-Jung Foundation Chicago, and sponsored by Honam Foundation and The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council Chicago.

2026년 5월 18일, 시카고한인문화원(Maru)에서 제46주년 5·18 광주 민주화운동 기념행사가 열렸습니다. 지역 주민과 귀빈이 이 뜻깊은 자리에 함께해 1980년 광주 민주화운동에서 희생된 분들을 기리고 우리의 역사를 되돌아보는 시간을 가졌습니다.

올해 기념행사에서는 홍상우 신임 시카고 총영사께서 이재명 대통령의 메시지를 전달했습니다.

하나센터 이사 임미라 님은 1.5세대 한국계 미국인 이민자로서의 경험을 되돌아보며, 5·18 광주 민주화운동의 유산이 어려운 시기에도 정의, 공동체, 연대, 사랑을 상징한다는 점을 공유했습니다.

서버브 청소년 협의회 멤버 리디아 안와 유나 정 학생들이 젊은 세대가 광주 민주화운동의 역사를 배우고 이어가는 것의 중요성에 대해 이야기했습니다.

이번 행사는 하나센터, 5·18 광주 세계연대 시카고, 김대중 재단 시카고지회 주최하고, 호남향우회, 민주평통 시카고 협의회가 후원했습니다.
