Closing the Gap in Health Equity: HANA November Newsletter
Closing the Gap in Health Equity
On Saturday, October 14th, HANA Center hosted our 40th Annual Health Fair at Swedish Covenant Hospital. More than 80 healthcare professionals volunteered to provide 559 in-language health screenings and free and reduced-cost services to 138 Korean American community members from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Among those who received care were undocumented community members and a woman in her late 40's who received her first pap smear. HANA invites you to partner with us to support our year-round delivery of health education, screenings, and referrals.
Join us in achieving health equity by making sure affordable health care is a reality for all! Urge your Senators and Representative not to repeal the Affordable Care Act. #SaveOurHealthcare
October Highlights
Support for a Clean DREAM Act
We continue to meet with elected officials to urge Congress to support a clean DREAM Act for 3.3 million young people, their families and communities. Thank you to Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth and Congress(wo)men Luis Gutierrez, Jan Schakowsky, Mike Quigley, Brad Schneider, and Raja Krishnamoorthi for supporting a clean DREAM Act!
Job Fair with Bee Line
HANA partnered with Bee Line to host a Job Fair complete with on-the-spot interviews. As a result of the fair, we were able to place community members with jobs in one day! To learn about job opportunities or partner with HANA as an employer, please contact Jennifer Brown at jbrown@hanacenter.org.
Adoptee Rights Advocacy
HANA leaders met with representatives from Korea Adoption Services to share about our work with the Adoptee Rights Campaign and to advocate for passing the Adoptee Citizenship Act, which would grant automatic citizenship to 18,000 Korean Adoptees. Support the Adoptee Rights Campaign by purchasing a t-shirt!
Drumming Up Power with CCA
A collaboration between HANA Center, Chicago Cultural Alliance, Lawndale Christian Legal Center, and Southside Together Organizing for Power, Drumming Up Power brought together young people and families from all across the city to build community and create a powerful alliance through drumming together!
