HANA Civic Justice Fellowship

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area, community-based non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois. 

HANA’s Community Organizing program builds a strong base and leadership of community members to advance social, economic, and racial justice. HANA organizes on-going community education and cultural programs, political education series, skills-building trainings, and year-round civic engagement. HANA also advocates for policies that support all immigrants, including undocumented, youth, adults, families, older adults, and intercountry adoptees. 

Position Summary

HANA’s Civic Justice Fellowship is a 9-week fellowship for young people interested in exploring a career in community organizing and non-partisan voter engagement. The Fellow will engage HANA’s base to exercise their right to vote while advocating for language access and election protections leading up to the 2026 Midterm Elections. Fellows will learn how to engage community members in electoral participation through voter outreach, education, and fieldwork.

This program will run from September 8 through November 6.  

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct bilingual nonpartisan voter engagement workshops, voter registration drives, and community outreach 

  • Lead civic engagement and GOTV phone banking, canvassing/literature drops, text banking, etc.

  • Help recruit and train canvassers and volunteers on voter engagement tactics

  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry of fieldwork and outreach and report on results

  • Support Election Day mobilization efforts, including early voting initiatives

  • Build relationships with community organizations and local organizations

  • Participate in and complete all required civic engagement training

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Korean and English languages, both verbal and written, is required

  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice

  • Belief in communities’ ability to support each other, heal, organize, and achieve desired goals together

  • Experience working on Korean American, Asian American, immigrant community issues, and/or social, economic, and racial justice issues preferred

  • Ability to effectively develop and implement outreach and relationship building efforts to increase community engagement and work collaboratively in local partnerships

  • Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail, accuracy, and proven track record of meeting deadlines

  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, think creatively, and problem solve with a commitment to continued learning

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • A valid driver’s license, car, and car insurance strongly preferred

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required

Reports To: Civic Engagement Coordinator

Compensation: $24.00 per hour for 25-30 hours/week + reimbursement for work-related mileage
