Bilingual Korean Computer Instructor (Contractor) 

Job Description

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area, community-based non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois. 

HANA Center’s Workforce Empowerment program equips English-language learning Korean and multiethnic immigrant community members with the education, tools, and resources to develop core skills and actualize their goals, including naturalization, enrollment in continued education, and employment in safe, living-wage jobs.  

Position Summary

The Korean Bilingual Computer Instructor will teach digital literacy to Korean-speaking community members by teaching computer skills, integrating community-rooted learning, and organizing approaches to advance HANA’s mission of social, racial, and economic justice. This position is contracted 3 hours a week and may expand to additional sections throughout the program year.  

Major Responsibilities

  • Create a positive learning environment emphasizing how technology can improve their active lives and advance community involvement through civic engagement, organizing, leadership development, social justice, and advocacy 

  • Create and implement curriculum that prepares students to test for and obtain Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification 

  • Conduct pre/post Northstar Digital Literacy tests to measure student gains 

  • Provide orientation sessions to familiarize new students with classroom technology and regular technical support to access video platforms 

  • Support student intake, testing, and keep attendance with the instructor meeting as requested 

  • Other duties as assigned 

Key Qualifications:

  • Bilingual proficiency in Korean and English is required 

  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice 

  • Belief in communities’ ability to support each other, heal, organize, and achieve desired goals together 

  • Experience working on Korean American, Asian American, immigrant community issues, and/or social, economic, and racial justice issues preferred 

  • Minimum 1-year experience teaching, developing, and modifying curriculum for Computer Technology program experience preferred 

  • Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse learners

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, critically analyze issues, and advance creative and flexible solutions 

  • Proven ability to engage and be patient with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of technology proficiency 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 

  • Professional computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Proficiency with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and ZOOM/Google Meets/Teams required 

  • Reliably commute to the HANA NWC office in Prospect Heights, IL on a regular basis 

Schedule:

  • 2 hours per week instruction 

  • 10 hours of initial curriculum development plus one hour (1) of prep time each week during the workshop session 

  • At the end of each session, check in with the HANA Workforce Empowerment Coordinator  

  • HANA classes are quarterly (10 weeks): Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter 

Reports To: Workforce Empowerment Coordinator  

Compensation: This contract position is $23.00-25.00 per hour, up to 3 hours per week for 10 weeks.
