 Job Description

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.

HANA’s Housing Services are part of its community capacity building programs. Through these services HANA outreaches to over 2,000 community members to support them to obtain and maintain affordable housing. Services include application assistance for rental and mortgage relief programs, landlord recruitment, individual and group-based housing counseling, education, information, and referrals. HANA is certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide housing counseling to low income community members.

The Housing Services Team Lead will oversee a team of HUD certified housing counselors and housing assistance coordinators. The Housing Services program assists low-income community members with rental and mortgage assistance, pre- and post-purchase housing counseling, and budgeting and financial management support.

Major Responsibilities:  

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Supervise a team of counselors, staff, interns, and volunteers to provide housing related services to immigrants and low/moderate income individuals and families

  • Take a lead role in developing the Housing Services annual program plan with goals, objectives, and outcome measures 

  • Complete housing program reports in an accurate and timely manner to meet funder requirements

  • Participate in an ongoing evaluation of the programs

  • Provide housing counseling in the areas of rental, pre-purchase, post-purchase, and foreclosure prevention

  • Assist community members with applying for housing assistance including rental assistance, mortgage assistance, and housing assistance for special populations

  • Research housing resources and match clients with appropriate opportunities

  • Support housing team members to increase knowledge and experience related to housing programs and services and to pursue housing certifications

  • Develop timely and accurate program informational materials to share with clients, ethnic media, HANA’s communications staff, and community at large

  • Conduct community outreach and workshops to share information and recruit clients for services

  • Participate in all required educational programs, training, meetings, and staff meetings

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice

  • A belief in communities’ ability to support each other, organize, and achieve desired goals together

  • 2+ years of experience working on Korean American, Asian American, or immigrant community issues

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, faith, economic, and racial / ethnic backgrounds

  • Experience providing high quality services to low-income, recent immigrant community members

  • HUD certified housing counselor or ability to become HUD certified within 6 months of hire date

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team

  • Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and meet established timelines and goals

  • Excellent organization and analytical skills

  • B.A. degree or equivalent life experience preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English or Korean/English required

  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed; some evenings and weekends required

  • Valid driver’s license, access to a car, and ability to travel between HANA’s offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights

Reports to: Senior Manager of Social Services

Compensation:  This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $50,000-$55,000 and benefits that include paid time off, health, dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term disability, life, and 401K.
