Korean Bilingual Computer Instructor

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area, community-based non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.

HANA primarily engages low-income, limited-English proficient community members, prioritizing those who have been historically marginalized and have not had access to resources, including older adults, children and youth of color, women, undocumented immigrants, survivors of gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ individuals, and intercountry adoptees. HANA primarily serves Korean and Latine immigrants in Korean, Spanish, and English; although HANA also serves other Asian, African, and Middle Eastern immigrants and Black Americans. Currently, HANA engages 16,000 community members annually in the City of Chicago and northwest suburbs.

HANA Center’s Community Education program equips English-language learning Korean and multiethnic immigrant community members with the education, tools, and resources to develop core skills and actualize their goals, including naturalization, enrollment in continued education, and employment in safe, living-wage jobs.

Position Summary:

The Korean Bilingual Computer Instructor will teach digital literacy to Korean-speaking community members by teaching computer skills, integrating community-rooted learning, and organizing approaches to advance HANA’s mission of social, racial, and economic justice. This position is contracted 4 hours a week and may expand to additional sections throughout the program year.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Create a positive learning environment emphasizing how technology can improve their active lives and advance community involvement through civic engagement, organizing, leadership development, social justice, and advocacy.

  • Create opportunities for students to apply their learned skills by participating in community actions and campaigns at the HANA Center.

  • Provide orientation sessions to familiarize new students with classroom technology and regular technical support to access video platforms.

  • Support with student intake, recruitment, testing, and outreach by making calls and encouraging students to return if necessary. Keep attendance.

  • Attend Instructor meetings as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual proficiency in Korean is required, and English is preferred.

  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice.

  • Belief in communities’ ability to support each other, heal, organize, and achieve desired goals together.

  • Experience working on Korean American, Asian American, immigrant community issues, and/or social, economic, and racial justice issues preferred.

  • Minimum 1-year experience teaching, developing, and modifying curriculum for Computer Technology program experience preferred.

  • Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse learners.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, critically analyze issues, and advance innovative solutions.

  • Proven ability to engage and be patient with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of technology proficiency.

  • Approach community members and programming with open-mindedness, creativity, and flexibility.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Professional computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Proficiency with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and ZOOM/Google Meets required.

  • Reliably commute to the HANA NWC office in Prospect Heights, IL on a regular basis

Schedule:

  • Every Wednesday or Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. (3 hours per week )

  • One hour (1) of prep time each week during the workshop session

  • At the end of each session, check in with the HANA Outreach Coordinator

  • HANA classes are quarterly (8 weeks): Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter

Reports To: Outreach Coordinator

Compensation: This contract position is $22.00 per hour, up to 4 hours per week for 8 weeks.
