Accounting Associate

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area, community-based non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.

HANA engages a primarily low-income, limited-English proficient community, prioritizing community members who have been historically marginalized and have not had access to resources, including older adults, youth of color, women, undocumented families, survivors of gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ individuals, and intercountry adoptees. Currently, HANA engages 16,000 community members annually in the City of Chicago and northwest suburbs. Key programs include immigration services, crisis intervention and domestic violence assistance, case management, workforce development, health education and screenings, ESL and citizenship classes, public benefits assistance, pro-bono legal services, housing services, senior services, youth leadership development, community organizing, and civic engagement.

Position Summary

The Accounting Associate is a vital member of HANA’s finance team and is responsible for day-to-day accounting and grant/contract vouchering. A successful Accounting Associate provides critical support to all HANA programs and services, thus enabling the organization to meet its mission and serve the community.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepare monthly grant vouchers and reimbursement submissions

  • Review, correctly code, and process vendor invoices and employee expense reports for payment

  • Make bank deposits for checks and cash received

  • Record multi-sourced deposits

  • Assist with monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, credit cards, and other balance sheet accounts

  • Monitor grant budget to actual expenditures and assist with budget revisions as necessary

  • Support organizational and contract specific financial audits, providing necessary information and reports to auditors

  • Generate financial reports and statements as requested

  • Maintain orderly and up-to-date financial records and files, both online and hard copy

  • Maintain accounting procedures, policies, and systems of internal controls to ensure the integrity of all financial systems

  • Participate in regular staff meetings, staff training, and supervisory sessions

  • Other duties as assigned

Key Qualification:

  • Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice

  • Belief in communities’ ability to support each other, heal, organize, and achieve desired goals together

  • Experience working on Korean American, Asian American, immigrant community issues, and/or social, economic, and racial justice issues preferred

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field 

  • 1 year of experience in accounting or finance (preferred)

  • Proficiency in accounting software (Quickbooks preferred) and Microsoft Excel

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Prior experience with government contracts and vouchering at the local and state levels preferred

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Bilingual proficiency in Korean and/or Spanish is an asset 

  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as required

Reports To: Senior Manager of Finance

Compensation: This is a full-time position with a salary range of $45,000-$55,000 and benefits that include paid time off, health, dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term disability, life, and 401K.
